The Tempest [1979]
Customer Review: Guaranteed to put you off Shakespeare
I usually grit my teeth and see things through, but with this film I hadn’t the courage. Its start was slow, dreary and pretty much inaudible. I didn’t know the story of The Tempest before watching this version, and within 15 minutes I was completely discouraged that I ever would know the story. I think Prospero is supposed to be a “goodie”, but he seemed mad, bad and dangerous to me. Although I was mildly intrigued at the appearance of Toyah Wilcox as the heroine, it wasn’t enough to keep me watching. Other Shakespeare adaptations I have enjoyed are Much Ado About Nothing (Brannagh) and Hamlet (Mel Gibson).

Customer Review: Ghastly, awful, a complete travesty
I found nothing to appeal in this ‘Tempest’ adaptation. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the staging. It turned a magical and appealing play into a slow, disagreeable, agonising torture. It was almost impossible to follow the plot, much less make sense of the characters or the major issues explored in such depth in this last play of Shakespeare’s. It’s such a shame. What a waste of talent.

Killer Net [1998]
Customer Review: killer net is addictive !!!!
Great acting. The film is 3 hours long but it really will not feel like it. It is brilliant. You really feel for the characters. This is full of suspense and twist. The film follows all the characters and pieces things together perfectly. It makes you look at internet games in a different way. The question is will they actually make this game ? I hope so in a way (just for fun obviously). It is a film that i found myself asking… If only !!! you will see what i mean when you watch it. This will not dissapoint.

Customer Review: Interesting mid-nineties retrospective
I remember seeing this when it was first screened and it was great to watch it again 10 years on. It centres around a bunch of flat-sharing students in mid-nineties Brighton who, amongst the usual things, like to spend their spare time messing about with the internet. They discover from a dubious source an internet game called Killer Net, which although coming from the US features a conveniently local setting and real-life characters. As the plot progesses the game proceeds to become even more disturbingly lifelike as a real murder is commited exactly as featured in the game. The plot is a little disjointed, but its still an interesting retrospective on mid-nineties Brighton and student life, with scenes featuring rave clubs which were at their peak at the time, the fashions of the day, and obviously the early days of the internet. Broadband and camcorders were then still a twinkle in Microsofts eye, and in order to communicate with someone live online you really did need to do some major surgery to your hard drive. Oh and you could also quickly run up a £1000 telephone bill too. The cast features Paul Bettany, and Emily Woof, plus a young Zoe Lucker who later appeared in footballers wives!

The Man With Two Brains [1983]
Meet Dr Michael Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin), the famous brain surgeon. Perhaps the name is not unfamiliar, though it is unpronounceable; the good doctor is the inventor of the celebrated “screw-top” method of brain surgery, in which the top of the skull twists off as easily as the lid of a pickle jar. The man may be a medical genius, but his talent for love leaves something to be desired, which explains his marriage to a gold-digging vixen (Kathleen Turner). Ah, but Dr. Hfuhruhurr may yet find true love, in the form of the disembodied brain he discovers in the lab of a mad scientist–David Warner, gone the Frankenstein route. (Lovely image: Hfuhruhurr in a rowboat, taking the brain out for a romantic ride on the lake.) Thus, in its own utterly goofy way, does The Man with Two Brains delve into the eternal dilemma of male indecision: does a man fall in love with a woman’s body, or with her mind? Along the way, of course, there are gags both highbrow and very, very lowbrow, a mind-body split that might be why critics have tended to prefer the more sophisticated slapstick of All of Me (directed, like this film, by Carl Reiner) and Roxanne among the early Steve Martin outings. Still, this is one of Martin’s funniest pictures, and a game Kathleen Turner, fresh off her Body Heat success, ably spoofs her own sultry image. The cerebral love object is voiced by Sissy Spacek. –Robert Horton

Customer Review: Twice as boring
Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin) has a problem choosing between brain waves, Anne Uumellmahaye (Sissy Spacek), and “Body Heat”, Dolores Benedict (Kathleen Turner). The whole premise is can love be found in a bottle.

I thought ‘The jerk’ was bad until I saw this movie, both mysteriously directed by Carl Reiner. All he does is make faces with no real acting or thought behind them. A few faces are o.k. but over an over of watching grins and grimaces can get monotonous. I almost stopped watching Steve martin that is capable of making good movies like “House Sitter” (1992) with Goldie Hawn.

Customer Review: Dated movie but a classic
This is Steve Martin before he started making boring not so funny family type movies. It’s a bit dated but he is so silly. So many funny scenes, such as when he is rowing a boat on a lake with a brain in a jar and he sticks a pair of wax lips on the jar so he can kiss it (he fell in love with a brain).
