Customer Review: A balanced narrated slide show of works, but short
A narrated (often by quotes from Vincent’s letters to Theo) slide show of Van Gogh’s works interlaced with illustrating them video clips, but without expert interview-like commentaries directly spoken from the screen. The selection of works is well balanced between all periods of his 10 year long carrier including his early works not shown else illustrating the development of Van Gogh’s talent. Customer Review: Good as an intro, but…
If you’re new to the world of Vincent Van Gogh then you will find this documentary informative. I was expecting the quality of direction to be more engaging since the production is about a great artist but nevertheless it has good coverage of his paintings and the commentary gives you a good perspective on the artist’s life and his work. However, if, like me, you’ve seen the movie ‘Lust for Life (1956)’ starring Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn and/or if you have reference books about Vincent Van Gogh then you will find this production nothing but a DVD collection of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings more or less. It’s not a ‘how to DVD’ either because it’s not about his brush strokes and his era, etc. This production is a tribute to the artist by group of people who loved to do it.
