The Power of One is an intriguing story of a young English boy named P.K. and his passion for changing the world. Growing up he suffered as the only English boy in an Afrikaans school. Soon orphaned, he was placed in the care of a German national named Professor von Vollensteen (a.k.a. “Doc”), a friend of his grandfather. Doc develops P.K.’s piano talent and P.K. becomes “assistant gardener” in Doc’s cactus garden. It is not long after WWII begins that Doc is placed in prison for failure to register with the English government as a foreigner. P.K. makes frequent visits and meets Geel Piet, an inmate, who teaches him to box. Geel Piet spreads the myth of the Rainmaker, the one who brings peace to all of the tribes. P.K. is cast in the light of this myth. After the war P.K. attends an English private school where he continues to box. He meets a young girl, Maria, with whom he falls in love. Her father, Professor Daniel Marais, is a leader of the Nationalist Party of South Africa. The two fight to teach the natives English as P.K.’s popularity grows via the myth. Maria is killed. P.K. looses focus until he sees the success of his language school among the tribes. He and Guideon Duma continue the work in hopes of building a better future for Africa.

Customer Review: Hokum & Bunkum
A mish-mash of clashing concepts. The poor-but-from-a-good-family white english-speaking South African boy endures taunts and torture from Nazi Afrikaner schoolmates (wearing swastikas and saluting ‘Heil Hitler’), encouraged from the pulpit and lectern by fascist Afikaner schoolmasters and preachers. He endures, befriends a (jewish?) music professor exile from Germany who is gaoled during the 2nd world war, learns to box from a black prisoner, is brilliant in music, boxing and apparently all else. Undermines the oppressive Afrikaner apartheid system from within, wins the respect of the black township dwellers by boxing their champion silly and by then organising classes to teach the masses English (apparently their greatest need) with the assistance of the beautiful daughter of one of the fascists - who was apparently previously insufficiently aware of her life of priveledge and the surrounding inequity. Naturally the great white hero wins the day and we can look forward to a good, liberal society where everyone speaks good English and the masses can walk the streets home to their township shacks free in the knowledge that their (white, english speaking) politicians truly care, and excel in pugilistic entertainment. Apartheid was bad, the nationalist government of the 1950s had a strong vein of fascism and some anti-anglicism. There is no need to dress this dire history with hokum. What would Steve Biko or other Black Empowerment spokespeople have to say about this one?

After having read the book, the movie was a HUGE disappointment to say the least.

Customer Review: If you want to read a book about RFK’s murder then read this one.
I bought this book a while back at a local book store and I was blown away by how well researched this book was. I highly recommend this book to anyone researching the death of RFK. Just fasten your seatbelt first.
Customer Review: Objective history
This is a history of the strangest assassination that you could imagine. It looked like an open and shut case. The LAPD made darn sure that those looks stayed that way. In spite of the objectivity, it becomes clear that there is more to this assassination, and cover up, than meets the eye. The case seems quite strong that there were more bullets fired than Sirhans gun could hold. All of the shots into Kennedy were identified as entering from the rear. Sirhan was in front of Kennedy. The fatal shot was placed within inches of Kennedy’s head. The LAPD ripped the pantry apart and destroyed the evidence while doing so. A photographers camera was seized at gun point, actually six LAPD cops at gun point. All of the photos from inside the pantry were not returned. There is a shady hypnotist with a proclaimed CIA past and an even shadier preacher man who went to the LAPD on the following day and claimed to have met Sirhan strictly via picking him up as a hitch hiker on the day of the assassination. The preacher has a law record as long as your forearm and it is proved that he had known Sirhan for a considerable amount of time. The allegation that he had previously bought clothes for Sirhan will make you rub your eyes. The biggest story is that he suddenly had a nice Lincoln and was flashing up to thirty $1000 bills about the time of the assassination. This in spite of constantly being broke before the event. There are LAPD members with CIA connections who squeezed in some side work in Latin America. One may wonder if their “other” employment was that of “jackals” (hitmen). Then you have the well built lady with the funny nose and the polka dot dress, and her partner, that is reputed to have ran from the scene yelling that they had just shot Kennnedy. They had recently entered the building via the fire escape stair case that is attached to the rear of multi-level buildings. Sirhan had also been warned by a friend to quit placing himself under hypnosis so much. If you think this all seems pretty strange, get ready for more. Then consider that the books were ordered destroyed by fire shortly after publication. This assassination deserved a lot more investigation. At least we got a serious effort from the authors.

Customer Review: Just when you thought they couldn’t get better-they did.
After a four year interlude since Lo que te conte….. in 2003, La Oreja de Van Gogh have come back and they are on incredible form.If you lived thier previous albums you will LOVE ‘Guapa’. By using sucessful elements of thier highly acclaimed previous album ‘Lo que te conte…’aswell as new and innovative techniques La Oreja have created another masterpiece. Its the kind of album that if you liked thier previous works will grow on you fast after you’ve listened to each song several times. The best songs in my opinion are Dulce Locura, Manhattan, Perdida and Muneca de Trapo. Amaias voice is a breath of fresh air in a music world so often void of any real emotion. Innovative, startling, refreshing and 100% worth buying, if you love Spanish pop/rock then you will LOVE this album. They do not disappoint!

Customer Review: Great new album from Spain’s finest band
Once again La Oreja De Van Gogh have produced a top-notch album combining elements of everything that’s good about Spanish pop music. As with their other releases, the lyrics are great, the songs are very catchy and yet it doesn’t feel like the predictable Euro pop you may expect such a band to resemble. I don’t think it quite matches up to their previous album, “Lo Que Hac?a..” but that’s only because such a masterpiece was going to be virtually impossible to improve upon. They have, however, acquired a more mature sound without making any drastic changes, especially when compared with their first two albums. I find it too difficult to say which songs stand out because they are all great. It’s just a shame the band aren’t well known in the UK, because they are a hell of a lot better than most bands here.

Gradualia: Marian Masses

Customer Review: Bringing Heaven to Earth
William Byrd’s polyphonous Masses are marvels of composition and the human voice. Each song is crystalline, like a perfectly cut diamond. In the “Gradualia: Marian Masses”,five a cappella voices are woven together. It’s exhilarating, sensual music. It brings pleasure to the ear&balm to the soul. Byrd brought the polyphonous arts of Palestrina to the shores of Tudor England. As a Catholic, he faced potential persecution for his faith. Somehow, miraculously, he survived. He could be compared to David playing his harp to soothe King Saul’s soul. The Marian Masses have a universal appeal. A devout Catholic hears orthodoxy translated into musical form; for a Goddess worshipper, it’s a celebration of the feminine divine. A Buddhist can visualize Tara, the embodiment of compassion; even an atheist can appreciate the humane skill of Byrd. Music is healing.
Customer Review: a voice teacher and early music fan
BECAUSE BYRD USED HIS HEAD HE KEPT IT!!!! A Catholic in the Protestant England of Queen Elizabeth had to be careful to keep his head, in every sense of the word. William Byrd, Master of Musicke, succeeded in living to be eighty years old and dying in one piece. By writing for the Protestant Church a Great Service and a Short Service, and for the Papists three masses, besides madrigals, anthems, and hymns,he remained in the good graces of both. Today he is acknowledged as one of the most versitile, original, and creative composers of all time. The Marian Masses that form the contents of this recording include not only the Marian Feasts generally authorised in 1605, but also the Votive Masses associated with the Virgin. A Votive Mass is a Mass offered for a particular intention or purpose, either on behalf of a group of people, or, as in this case, to a saint who was thought to possess special powers of entreaty at the throne of heaven. This recording contains motets for 3 to 5 voices that comprise the entire material for the Marian Masses. However, it’s not necessary to get too involved in the structure of the mass but to simply enjoy William Byrd’s polyphonic writing. There isn’t a church within miles from where I live that sings any of this music at all including the Catholic churchs. That’s why we all seek out recordings to satisfy our musical thirst. The singing on this CD is exquisite, the balance always correct and the intensity of devotion always right. And no wonder if you look at the 5 voice choir: Deborah Roberts, David Cordier, Michael Chance, John Mark Ainsley and Michael George. This is a cappella singing at its greatest!

J.M.W. Turner: Ackroyd’s Brief Lives

Also available in ACKROYD’S BRIEF LIVES
Chaucer

In this second volume in the Ackroyd’s Brief Lives series, bestselling author Peter Ackroyd brings us a man of humble beginnings, crude manners, and prodigious talents, the nineteenth-century painter J. M. W. Turner.

Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London in 1775. His father was a barber, and his mother came from a family of London butchers. “His speech was recognizably that of a Cockney, and his language was the language of the streets.” As his finest paintings show, his language was also the language of light. Turner’s landscapes—extraordinary studies in light, colour, and texture—caused an uproar during his lifetime and earned him a place as one of the greatest artists in history.

Displaying his artistic abilities as a young child, Turner entered the Royal Academy of Arts when he was just fourteen years old. A year later his paintings appeared in an important public exhibition, and he rapidly achieved prominence, becoming a Royal Academician in 1802 and Professor of Perspective at the Academy from 1807–1837. His private life, however, was less orderly. Never married, he spent much time living in taverns, where he was well known for his truculence and his stinginess with money.

Peter Ackroyd deftly follows Turner’s first loves of architecture, engraving, and watercolours, and the country houses, cathedrals, and landscapes of England. While his passion for Italy led him to oil painting, Turner’s love for London remained central to his heart and soul, and it was within sight of his beloved Thames that he died in 1851. His dying words were: “The sun is God.”

Customer Review: Words About Visuals: A Biography
Peter Ackroyd is a fine writer and continues his Brief Lives Series with this insightful biography of one of England’s greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner. But readers beware - this is a book about the artist’s life and is not a book to examine the artist’s works. But there are plentiful other resources for viewing the magnificent paintings of light that Turner created. Ackroyd adroitly explores Turner’s humble background, elaborating on how this most elegant gentleman of the canvas began as a Cockney lad with little formal education. When he was 14 he entered the Royal Academy and within a year’s time he was exhibiting his work! Turner was a man of nature and his misty seascapes and landscapes of England have won him permanent status in the pantheon of great painters. He was fascinated by light and the effect that light has through mists and clouds, storms and tree filtered glades. He had a particular affinity for architecture and his early works are primarily in watercolor and etchings. His experience with oil painting opened with his introduction to Italy. Ackroyd, with a zest for truthful telling, emphasizes that Turner’s private life was spent in the taverns, fathering illegitimate children and maintaining a mistress. Apparently a miser, he was not the rarefied ‘gentleman’ his paintings would suggest. This is a fine little biography, filled with the facts about the personal life of Turner and a bit lacking on his artistic influences, but as an adjunct to other volumes on his work, books that neglect to look at the man holding the brush, this succinct ‘life’ affords important insights. Customer Review: manifique
It was a birthday present to me, and it has to be the best book i’ve read on two fabulous artists. Loads of illustrations to compare the two artists work showing how they competed against each other. All in all a fabulous and well illustrated book.

In the late 1860’s Monet continued to study landscape painting working with Courbet at Trouville and working frequently with Renoir at Le Grenouillere. It was at Le Grenouillere, that the first pure Impressionist painting took form. It was a radical departure from academic standards.
