Pierre Auguste Renoir. 1841 -
1919
Born 1841 the son of a tailor in
Limoges, France. When he was only 4 years old his family decided to
move to Paris. When Pierre became 13 he was apprenticed to a painter
in a factory which made and decorated china-ware. Here he was
trained to paint in the 18th century style. To earn extra money he
sold copies of 18th century paintings which he copied in the Louvre,
Paris and also attended classes in the evenings to try to improve
his painting technique. When he was 21 he joined the studio of
Gleyre where he became aquatinted with other artists and became
friends with Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley. His painting was
interrupted by the onset of the war between France and Prussia and
during this time only a few paintings were completed. After the was
over, his paintings began to become much richer in colour, mainly
due to his friendship and involvement with the Impressionists. The
majority of the Impressionists were involved with painting nature
and landscapes, but Renoir chose to include figures and people in
his pictures and his style began to progress and develop as he began
to include children as the main subject with a garden or landscape
background. The children in his paintings appear to be aware of
their importance within the picture and his skill of portraying the
young child in a floral background proved very popular with his
clients.
He painted right up to the day he
died even though he had extreme difficulty holding his brushes due
to a long and painful illness. He became one of the most important
of the French Impressionists and his paintings are enjoyed by many
art lovers throughout the world.
Died 1919
